Kathleen Landwehrle Photography proudly presents CV and Alex’s private, Vermont wedding. CV and Alex were married at a friend’s private home in Stowe, Vermont. Through the early summer rains the couple smiled and enjoyed their pond side wedding. Traditional elegant hats were plentiful as an honor to Alex’s British family. The ceremony was made even more special led by a priest from the Church Alex attended through childhood. The rain continued on and off into the evening leaving the guests dancing barefoot to a live band at the reception. With great skies and beautiful details, the rain helped make some pretty portraits. One on the theme’s for the wedding CV explained during his wonderful toast quoting his Grandfather about good times in life and the memories he had while sailing with his Grandfather and while under sail hearing his Grandfather shout out “How sweet it is”.

Where are you from? Tell us a little about yourself.

I grew up on a horse farm in Upstate New York and dreamed of becoming a fashion designer from the age of six.  After graduating from Parsons School of Design and New York University, I started my own women’s couture fashion business on 7th Avenue.   But every press interview with fashion editors tended to touch on my love of baking… whether I was on the road at a Saks Fifth Avenue, at a Neiman Marcus trunk show or on the runway as Designer of the Year at the Dallas Mart.  Often my recipes were published in the articles about my high-fashion clothes!

Vermont Wedding Cakes

How did you initially get involved with weddings?

Wedding cakes became a natural extension of my couture baking business.  Prospective brides tasted my desserts in local restaurants and tracked me down.  The wedding part of my business became word of mouth, Vermont Vows magazine published a photo of my hand-sculpted peonies and the rest is history.

Vermont Wedding Cakes

What inspires you about working in Vermont?

Vermont’s natural beauty and wholesomeness inspire me daily to use only the freshest and highest quality ingredients in my confections.  (I have been known to personally introduce brides to my free-range pet chickens who often provide the uber-healthy eggs for their cakes!)

Vermont Wedding Cakes

What is your favorite part of the wedding day?

My absolute favorite part of the wedding day is hearing about (or in some cases, seeing) the reaction of the bride and groom as they view and taste their special cake created just for them!

How long have you been in the wedding industry?

Family and friends often urged me to start a baking business. Five years ago Jason Pacioni, owner of Black Diamond Catering, literally grabbed me by the hand and, with some of my desserts in tow, made me bring my creations to local restaurants.  Vermont Sweet Tooth was born and my wedding cake business blossomed a year later.

What are you passionate about? What motivates you?

I LOVE to design, create and bake specialty desserts of all kinds.  I waltz to work everyday…right into my Vermont kitchen overlooking Mt Mansfield and DaVinci, my swan, swimming on the ponds at our Birdsong Farm.   I love to meet with brides (and grooms) to hear the stories of how they met their partner, what their passions are, what their life together looks like.  The stories  and fun anecdotes I hear inspire me to create the wedding cakes of their dreams.  As an artist, I am passionate about creating the most beautiful and exciting cake possible.  AND most importantly, it has to taste just as great as it looks!  The wedding cake is the last presentation of the couple’s special day and I want it to be a spectacular and lasting memory for the bride, the groom and their guests.

Vermont Wedding Cakes

What sets you apart from other professionals in your industry? What makes your work unique?

I think it is my background in fashion and art…clothes should be spectacular both on the hanger and on the owner just like wedding cakes should be dazzling to look at and exceptionally good to eat.  I also love a challenge. The more unique or unusual the cake request, the better.  I can spend days hand-sculpting sugar paste into delicate real-life looking flowers or personality-plus pets or even sports memorabilia to adorn my Vermont Sweet Tooth cakes.  Whatever the special interests of the bride and groom I am eager to create a unique, elegant and/or whimsical cake.

I am so grateful to all the brides who have given me the opportunity to create my one-of-a-kind artistic and super-moist cakes.

Kathleen Landwehrle Photography proudly presents Adam and Alex’s Stone Hill Inn, Stowe, Vermont elopement. Adam and Alex had an intimate elopement at the Stone Hill Inn, Stowe, Vermont this fall. After the ceremony we spent some time around Stowe and even fit in their wedding moments.

From Alex and Adam:
We decided to elope in Stowe one night when we realized that having the day to ourselves to remember and cherish was the obvious and best thing for us to do. We chose Stowe because we wanted to stay in New England to get married in the fall (seemed like it would be romantic and cozy). Stowe and specifically the Stone Hill Inn popped up when I searched best places to elope in New England. We had only been to Vermont once before and never to Stowe, but we had a really good feeling about it.

Wedding cakes and cupcakes vary greatly based upon the talent, skill level, education and style of the pastry artist who is creating them.  Working in the event industry allows for certain fringe benefits, one of which is getting to taste and sample the delicious offerings that come often our way.  Michelle Hines from The Cakery has been ever so gracious as to bring many sample cakes for Vermont Wedding Parlor Couples to enjoy and sample.  All we can say about Michelle’s wedding cakes, cupcakes, and pastries is that they are truly wonderful! She has a wide variety of flavors, styles, and techniques that will delight your visual, olfactory, and taste senses. Vermont Wedding

Where are you from? Tell us a little about yourself…..

I’m originally from Michigan.   My family lives in the Land of General Motors, a cement playground.  I graduated Johnson and Wales with a Baking and Pastry Associates and a Foodservice Management Bachelors in Charleston, Sc.  I must have caught the traveling bug because instead of stogging under Premier Pastry Chefs and grinding it out in San Francisco, I chose to head out to Montana to pursue my own career in Pastry and find myself.  I met my husband along the way from Utah-Seattle-Maui-Stowe Vermont.  We now reside in Hyde Park and have two beautiful children.

Vermont Wedding

How did you initially get involved with weddings?

I’ve always been fascinated with wedding cake.  Always the first thing I personally checked out at weddings of friends and families.  Early on, cake decorating was by far my favorite class.  I Love the detail and precision that pastry art can accomplish.  And you end up with something tangible and decadent in the end.   Plus, there is something to be said for having such a huge part in one of the most memorable, rite of passage days in a person’s life.

Vermont Wedding

What inspires you about working in Vermont?

The way Vermont hugs you, the feeling that it brings from its farm fresh ingredients grown and produced by hardworking people to the air and attitude of peace, respect, and trustworthiness in its town locals.  It’s very special here.  I’ve been told many times that my work and cakes compare that found in the city, Montreal or New York.  Maybe… but, I wouldn’t be able to keep the feeling.  I couldn’t have the connection with my new and old clients or all the repeat business like, doing the manager of the Green Mountain Inn’s children’s Birthday cakes for six years and running.  I think I would lose the ability to touch and create every cake personally.

Vermont Wedding

What is your favorite part of the wedding day?

As far as my business is concerned, I’m only there for the set-up.  But, it’s a neat time.  It’s quiet and it’s elaborate.  When I bring the cake in everyone is hustling to complete the look and feel of the wedding and I am “the icing on the cake.”

Vermont Wedding

How long have you been in the wedding industry?

Well, I started doing cakes in Maui at the Fairmont Kea Lani and that was 11 yrs. ago.  I developed the standard for their wedding cake portfolio and started to come into my own feel and passion for cakes.  I’ll never forget a Wedgwood China cake I made.  It really resonated with me.  It was so detailed and took forever to pipe.  I loved everything about it.  I must have taken 2 dozen pictures of it.  But, I started to learn the importance of icing a cake and starting with a clean palette before beginning the design from Misha, my adopted Yugoslavian grandmother where I spent a summer icing cakes in her bakery when I was 18.  They all spoke yugo all day so I listened to the grateful Dead on my headphones and iced cake for 10 hrs. A day.

Vermont Wedding

What are you passionate about? What motivates you?

The art.  The connection.  I love creating the cake~ from simple to detailed designs.  My favorite is when couples bring lots of ideas to the tasting.  I always look over the pictures then turn to them and say,” tell me what you like about these.” and we develop together a unique style and design that showcases them as a couple.

What sets you apart from other professionals in your industry? What makes your work unique?

Oh, I don’t know.  I think all of us (bakers) really care about using the best ingredients and as much local as possible.  I think we are all artists.

I guess the only thing that might set me apart from others is just me being me.  You can ask 10 different bakers to create the same cake and we will all do it differently.  So, I do it how I do it.  I have my touch and my eye and I guess if you see my work and taste my cake and it warms something inside of you then we should work together.

Jon and Ali were married at Stowe Mountain Resort on Labor Day Weekend this year. Their flowers and decor reflected a rustic elegance and fit perfectly with the venue. They decided to see each other before the ceremony for a first look so we were able to take advantage of a number of beautiful vistas for their pictures. Riding around the golf course in a parade of golfcarts we got the full tour of the beautiful property.
Guests rode the gondola up to the top for their ceremony and then enjoyed the views during cocktail hour before descending the mountain and welcoming the newlyweds to dinner with sparklers. DJ Terry Urban (a friend from New York) kept people rocking on the dance floor throughout the night- the only break was to cut the ice cream cake (which also broke the knife!!)
Congratulations Jon & Ali!

Landwehrle Photography proudly presents Brooke and Nicole’s Topnotch wedding. As Hurricane Irene made its way towards the state of Vermont Brooke and Nicole said their vows at Topnotch Resort and Spa in Stowe. It was a perfect day and sweet match. Brooke, a weatherman and lover of sweet baked goods, married Nicole a baker. As the couple cut the cake the groom exclaimed how much he loved trying all the treats his new wife made. The pending storm created a perfect dramatic sky for sunset portraits. As a lovely favor, the guests enjoyed 3-tier sugar cookies made by the bride. The rain held off and the tent at Topnotch made for a beautiful setting.

We have the honor and privilege to have met many wonderful wedding vendors in the great state of Vermont since we opened Storied Events in 2005. We are so happy to have become acquainted with a great new talent on the Vermont photography scene, Alanna Scully.  Having spent over 15 years in Human Resources and Talent Acquisition, I have met many people in many different walks of life.   It is rare that you meet someone who is so perfectly suited to their profession as Alanna is to photography. She is easy to get along with and so truly genuine to herself, we are so proud to have her as one of our newest wedding parlor members!

Her ebullient persona, wonderful demeanor, and genuine kindness shines through in every aspect of her work. Allana’s stylish photography has been published in various online and print publications such as Stylemepretty, Vermont Vows, and Hindsightbride.  If you are looking for a super talented, high style, reasonably priced Vermont Wedding Photographer, you should certainly speak with Alanna to see if she is available on your date, don’t wait as her schedule is booking up for 2012!

Please enjoy the following photos of Alanna’s work and our Q & A:

How did you initially get involved with weddings?

I was working as a social worker when I went to a friend’s wedding and absolutely fell in love with the pictures.  I had never seen wedding photography like that, and having always loved photography and taking it through high school and college for fun, I decided to ask my friend’s wedding photographers if I could apprentice for them.   I was with them for one wedding season, and by the next I was taking on weddings of my own, while doing a ton of second shooting for a handful of photographers who all have different styles and approaches.  I adore wedding photography and love being with people on the best day of their lives.

Vermont Weddings

What inspires you about working in Vermont?

I can’t begin to describe the love I have for Vermont.  I grew up coming here on family vacations and then spent several summers as a teenager working at a family camp on the Champlain islands.  Everything about Vermont is inspiring; the mountain views, the sunsets over the lake, but most of all, the people.  Everyone is unique, but the one thing I’ve noticed is that Vermonters are incredibly welcoming, disarmingly friendly, and united in their love of this beautiful state and keeping it clean and safe.

Fall Weddings

What is your favorite part of the wedding day?

There are so many moments that make up a wedding, and make it the special day that it is.  The moment after the bride finally has her dress on is great.  There’s always at least 2 bridesmaids crying, and everyone gushing over how beautiful she looks.  I love when she sees the groom for the first time; whether it’s during a First Look or walking down the aisle, it’s always such a happy moment.  I love the moments right after the ceremony, when they get a few minutes to relax, and just look at each other and realize “This is my husband” or “This is my wife”…  the reactions to the toasts are always great too.  You hear some hilarious stories!

Vermont Wedding Photography

How long have you been in the wedding industry?

3 years!  I still feel like such a newbie, but I learn more about this industry every day and I love the people I have met along the way.  I owe everything to those who have taken me under their wing and those who have trusted me to capture their special moments.  I don’t take a minute of it for granted; I know how lucky I am to be doing what I love.

Wedding Photography

What are you passionate about? What motivates you?

Passionate is one of my favorite words in the dictionary.  A friend of mine once called me high-maintenance  and I was quick to correct her that I was just “passionate”.  I have two tin signs hanging in my room that I got in a fabulous gift shop when I was living in Nashville.  One says “Live With Passion” and the other says “Laugh Out Loud”.  They have become my mantra for the way I live and the way I want to photograph.  There’s nothing that makes me happier than photographing couples who can laugh at each other, full belly laughs and just be completely candid and have fun together, who share a true passion for each other and aren’t afraid to show that passion to the world.  My motivation is selfish:  I’d like to find true love myself one day.  I don’t want to shy away from it just because I’ve never had it.  I read something recently that said stop looking for the love of your life, they will be there waiting for you when you start doing things you love.  I love this job, I love seeing people in love, and I love that it gives me hope for my own future and finding that special someone.

Governor Jim Douglas and the Vermont Hospitality Council awarded Michael the first ever “Vermont Chef of the Year, 2007”, and the restaurant was honored as “Best of Waterbury Center, 2008 & 2009” by the US Local Business Association.

The restaurant has also received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence since 2009 &  the Santé Regional Winner as a Sustainable Restaurant in 2009. Michael’s On The Hill was also the first restaurant in Vermont to be a “Certified Green Restaurant” by the state.

House Smoked Trout with Heirloom Bean Salad & Horseradish Cream

Their cozy “farmhouse/barn” location offers a separate rehearsal dinner space that can accommodate up to 60 guests comfortably, however if needed the entire restaurant is available for rent as well for larger parties up to 100 guests.  Laura and Michael are always interested in creating customized wedding/rehearsal dinner menus based upon locally available ingredients to suit your needs.

How did you initially get involved with weddings?

I worked for a large event/restaurant company in New York City for several years before meeting Michael, and then when we relocated together to New York from Switzerland, Michael also came on board. It was a great learning experience for both of us because in addition to our restaurant jobs we were able to freelance on the side, learning to do so many different kinds of events, from casual groups at the US Open to very upscale events for 1,000 at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, and everything in between. To us, weddings are particularly fun because they are something that our clients may be dreaming of for their whole life. It is something they will remember forever, and being able to help build wonderful memories is exciting for us. We do all sorts of events ranging from birthdays to reunions, and regardless of the event, we take all of them very seriously.

What inspires you about working in Vermont?

The natural beauty is something that is obvious, and we love doing events that have a relaxed, unpretentious feel. We want the guest to immediately feel comfortable and welcome.   We love to be able to use local products to create atmosphere and enhance our menus. Being close to local farmers was a huge reason why we chose to have a restaurant in Vermont.

What is your favorite part of the wedding day?

Please elaborate.  When the bride and groom have finished their ceremony and photos, and first arrive to see the finished event space ready to enjoy themselves! So much work goes into the event planning for them. Watching them sigh and finally and happily taking in their vision is extremely gratifying for us.  We also do tons of rehearsal dinners at the restaurant. The rehearsal dinner is typically a more intimate and personal group, and there is a bit less stress on everyone. Because of this, it is an evening that will always be fondly remembered and we enjoy being part of it.

How long have you been in the wedding industry?

I started doing special events when I was 17 years old on the weekends, and have continued doing them on and off for the past 25 years. Michael has done various special events over the past 18 years. We opened Michael’s on the Hill just over 9 years ago and do all sorts of events at the restaurant and at offsite locations.

What are you passionate about? What motivates you?

We are passionate about great food and service, and creating the exact experience that our clients have dreamed of. Michael and I have a very strong work ethic and we are highly motivated to do the job properly and to make our clients as happy as they can be. To us, all we have is our name, and we’ll never take on an event that we feel we can’t handle and will never sacrifice the quality of an event or our brand out of greed. Because we also have the restaurant we need to balance it all properly in order to assure that ALL of our guests are getting what they deserve.  Because of this we unfortunately can’t take on all events brought to us, but we’d rather turn away from business unless we are 100% certain that it will be executed flawlessly. Either Michael or I are at each event to supervise, and that is something that I think is extremely important. In a nutshell, I think our drive towards excellence in everything we do is the biggest personal motivator for us!

What sets you apart from your competitors?

Michael and I own our business, and hold ourselves to a very high level in terms of quality, attention to detail and responsibility to our clients. When I am planning an event with a client I take as much time as is needed to explain, discuss and clarify all of the details. We also create custom menus to assure that they have exactly what they want.

I am rarely left speechless. Early this week I found myself without words, eyes pooling and frankly in shock.  The mass destruction surrounding the effects of rain Irene dumped into our waters is unfathomable. The roads in central Vermont I drive on to visit venues or when traveling for events are just gone.  The people and places I love so much are in need of help and I cannot do anything to assist them – I cannot even get to them if I tried.

After the shock, the planner in my brain switched on. What do we do in emergencies… think clearly, form a plan and put it into action. And that is exactly what most of us are doing right now – acting on plans. Rebuilding and focusing on the future. Accidents, catastrophes and random acts of fate happen everyday – people survive and weddings WILL survive. Most importantly weddings in Vermont will survive, grow and be better than before! We encourage couples seeking Vermont Destination Weddings to still come and enjoy all we have to offer… we are an incredible state with amazing talents and we all pull together to make magical events happen.

But for now, there are couples displaced due to flooding and weddings have been cancelled or postponed.  There is not much we can do, but we can certainly help. If you’re wedding venue has suffered severe damage or roads to the ceremony or reception site are closed, we suggest the following:

- IF the venue is capable of postponing the wedding and you okay with this, family and friends will certainly understand and you have another year to plan! If you must get married, have a small, intimate civil service with family and close friends and have the big party at your original venue in 2012.

-IF the venue is cancelling your wedding, find out if there is another site their kitchen staff and catering staff can work at. This way it might not be the exact venue you wanted, but you would have the same service, food and beverage you were planning on.

- IF your venue is closing all together and there are no options for you to postpone, or you do not want to, we are starting to compile a list of venues that are available, their open dates  and contact information.  These venues are more than willing to jump in and host a spectacular day.

*Please note Northern Vermont did not suffer much  -if at all road damage and all wedding venues are operational.

Here is the list to start, we hope to add to this as we move along and hear about availability from venues. (Forgive the formatting – we just want to get the list started and out.)
